Medical Device Interoperability

Interconnectivity and interoperability between medical devices sits at the top of the list of the hottest medical device challenges. With the ever-increasing number of medical devices used in hospitals and the lack of interoperability between them, hospitals face a great opportunity to improve patient care, avoid adverse events (drug/diagnostic errors, failure to prevent injury), and save money by standardizing the approaches used for connecting various devices and information systems.

While the common set of interoperability standards, requirements, and technology roadmaps is under development by various associations and under review by the FDA, the most insightful medical device vendors have already started the race to save over $400 million in device development and testing costs. If you want to stay ahead in this competition, you need a reliable and skilled provider with extensive project experience.

Auriga has expertise performing interoperability research and development for embedded and system-level software, not only for the medical device industry that remains mostly fragmented, but also for the high-tech hardware and software vendors for telecom, automotive, avionics, and other verticals.

What we bring to the table:

  • Full lifecycle development for medical devices, from prototyping to maintenance and support. Compliance with several medical device quality-management standards: ISO 13485, IEC 62304, IEC 60601-1, FDA 21 CFR Part 820.
  • Medical device interoperability expertise: the development of a central hospital station, X-Ray and CT HL7 protocol integration module for HIS, and other projects.
  • Auriga HL7 Library – an open-source library to provide interoperability for medical devices based on the HL7 v2.x protocol.
  • Years of hands-on experience with interoperability accumulated in other industries. Using an example from telecom:
    • Active participation in the development of the family of open standards targeting interoperability in the telecom industry. As a result, nearly 200 telecom vendors—members of the consortium and stakeholders in the interoperability efforts—are now building products compatible with each other on the mechanical and software levels.
    • Design and implementation of a telecom interoperability testing suite, which has been accepted and is being used industry-wide.
    • Implementation of the software for several devices that interact according to these open telecom standards.
  • 20+ years history of working with embedded operating systems at the kernel module & driver level.
  • Vast experience with re-engineering and porting to various hardware platforms of several operating systems, including hard real-time OSs, and several protocol stacks.
  • Professional community recognition – continuously made the Best Rising Stars by Industry Focus - Healthcare since 2007.

In addition to interconnectivity & interoperability expertise, Auriga’s deep understanding of the underlying system internals allows us to design embedded software capable of running on a diverse set of hardware equipment and operating systems with an extensive common code base and a relatively thin abstraction layer.
