Re-engineering and Porting for the Healthcare Domain

Modern medical equipment—including patient and respiratory monitors, infusion pumps, and dialysis devices—is not only sophisticated and complex in itself but also connected to numerous peripherals. If some components of these products reach the end-of-life phase and are no longer supported by the vendor, the medical device manufacturer has to make the difficult decision of how to get a reliable, up-to-date product that complies with the common global industry standards. Generally, there are two options: develop a totally new product or replace the outdated hardware and refactor the system so it can perform on the new platforms.

Auriga has recently solved a similar problem for one of its clients. Our engineers upgraded an outdated complex life-supporting medical device by porting the controlling application from a legacy platform to a modern ARM-based RTOS platform and to a newer version of the operation system. Auriga’s mature experience in the reengineering and porting domain helped us to exceed our Customer’s expectations and deliver a fully operational and up-to-date device in time and on budget.

Big Data in Healthcare

In recent years, Big Data has found its way into many different industries, and healthcare is probably the most promising one. Massive amounts of data collected by healthcare professionals help to predict epidemics, avoid preventable diseases, and considerably reduce treatment costs. Excited by the many opportunities Big Data offers, we at Auriga have already started working on our own Big Data solutions for the MedTech industry.

Auriga’s team implemented a high-load distributed scale-out cardiac monitoring system to alert users about approaching dangerous cardiac conditions. An in-depth statistical analysis of the huge amount of cardiac data coming from the sensors of portable ECG Holter devices, combined with information about external factors (for example, atmospheric pressure), enables not only continuous monitoring of hundreds of thousands of patients simultaneously but also prevention of cardiac disorders and makes the system comparable to real-time treatment.


The amount of patient data generated by various medical devices, wearables, and healthcare apps grows every day. However, hospitals can make use of all this information only when these devices communicate with a common protocol. Interoperability and interconnectivity between medical devices and systems in the hospital infrastructure affect patient safety and overall healthcare efficiency. The top three sets of interoperability standards include CCR, DICOM, and HL7.

Last year, Auriga started a new in-house initiative dedicated to the development of an open-source library to provide interoperability for medical devices based on the HL7 protocol. Auriga’s HL7 library is a multiOS, object-oriented HL7 v2 parser/generator for C++. It allows developers to easily use an HL7 object model for parsing and encoding necessary data. The library uses a combination of automatically generated code and carefully constructed handwritten modules and provides developers with a series of consistent, well-documented components.


Telemedicine is one of the fastest growing segments in healthcare. Implementing new technologies in healthcare institutions means cutting the number of patient visits; reducing the time patients spend in in-patient facilities; increasing the possibility of providing personalized care, better diagnostics, and access to specialists for residents of remote areas; and improving the overall quality of healthcare. Consequently, it leads to cutting costs and increasing profits.

At Auriga, we have gained considerable experience in delivering telemedicine solutions. For instance, our team developed an automated system of remote data mining and analysis to reveal and prevent serious disabling conditions. The system collects data from patient questionnaires and remote medical devices, analyzes it, and produces overall findings on a patient’s health. Interestingly, the system and the user can communicate using speech synthesis.
